Day 25 - Thoughts on Aging

Writer's picture: Lindsay VeeLindsay Vee

As we near the end of this writing challenge, some of my favorite prompts are coming up. This one included. I’m getting on a little bit of a soap box with this one, but hopefully it makes a little bit of a difference in someone’s way of thinking that it’s worth it in the long run. In short, I love aging. Getting older is an absolute privilege that not everyone gets to experience. It bothers me when people complain about an upcoming birthday because they’re one year older or getting gray hair or whatever the complaint might be. Having another birthday means you have another opportunity to fulfill God’s purpose in your life. That’s why they call the present a gift. It’s not your right and not everyone gets it.

It’s all too easy to take our time on earth for granted. in the last two years I’ve tried to use my birthday as a way to reset my perspective on life. I try to look at it from God’s point of view as much as possible rather than the numbers game we -lay in this world. Do I have X amount of money in the bank by this age? Will my body run out of eggs before I have all the kids I want because I’m older than my husband? Am I making enough money at my job for how long I’ve been in the work force? All of these number questions are valid, but gosh they just don’t actually matter in the grand scheme of things. They really don’t. why you might ask? Because if they aren’t doing anything to advance the kingdom of God from heaven down to earth then they just aren’t important.

Age is very much just a number to me. Age is not a pass for ultimate wisdom or understanding, but it does demand a certain level of respect. I’m not entirely sure where I’m headed with this so I’m going to land the plane real quick. If you’ve been given the unique gift to celebrate another birthday here on earth, cherish it. It means that your work here isn’t done and you can bet the Lord has something grand planned for your future. Make sure you aren’t wasting the time you’re given, because it can go ahead in an instant.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.“ - James 4:13-15
