This is a great prompt because when I was pregnant I craved smells more than food after about the midway point. I went completely out of my way more than a few times to hit up a western store where I would walk down the boot aisle to smell the leather. It wasn't nearly as satisfying as I had imagined, but it was at least worth a shot. Anyhow, here are some of my favorite smells.
1. Horse - I'm sure anyone who knows me could've guessed this one. I know a horse is a livestock animal and they're likely covered in a number of items related to manure, but they just smell good. And I always miss that smell when it's been too long since I've seen the horses now that they live almost 30 minutes away.
2. Sweaty horse - Yes, it's a different smell than number one.
3. Leather - this comes in many forms. One is the previously mentioned boot aisle at a western store, but the other is a saddle that's been inside the horse trailer on a hot summer day. That's right, hot leather.
4. Rain - I especially love the smell of rain in the spring, it's a signal that new life is coming and it's so refreshing.
5. Gasoline - Yes, I know it's not good to smell but I do enjoy it when I'm at the gas station. I don't go out of my way to smell it of course.
6. Fresh cut hay - This one is almost always paired with incoming rain, if you know, you know. It also takes me home to evenings out in the alfalfa field putting up hay. It was a small field, but when it was stupid hot and we were eating dust from the tractor and hay it sure felt like a very large field.
7. Fly spray - And not just any fly spray, it has to be Farnam Endure Sweat Resistant. This is what my mom bought for the horses when I was growing up. Every time I smell it, I'm transported back home to Oakland and a time when all I worried about was if we could go to the pool that afternoon because we would get super hot riding horses in the morning. This is probably the best small simply because of all the memories I have associated with it. And I don't buy this fly spray, so I only get to smell it on rare occasions.
