When I read a book, I get fully immersed. I have a tendency to take the feelings of the main characters with me when I close the book. If they're sad because of a breakup or betrayal, then I move through my day with those heavy feelings in my pocket. And the same is true if they're extra happy or excited. That probably seems completely off topic, but I think it illustrates how easily influenced I am by everything around me or what I'm consuming on purpose or accident. Coincidently, music is the same way for me.
I'm probably the worst kind of music listener. I get in a rhythm with about 10-20 songs at a time and I listen to them over and over until I find more songs to add to the list and some of the bottom ones drop off. I also have a tendency to listen to only part of a song before moving onto the next one. That's a good description of a personality flaw that I've come to recognize: always trying to jump ahead to the next thing because certainly it's better than what you're listening to currently. That got deep quick. Anyhow, here's my top five favorite songs. Some will be right now favorites and others are timeless.
Springsteen by Eric Church - this one takes me back to when I was 17 years old on main street of West Point, Nebraska, about to drag mains. Every time I hear this song I'm right back there, physically, mentally, the whole gamut. I'm not sure any song does that for me more than this one.
Might Be Everything by Ian Munsick - this song always makes me think about the life I want to and am currently building with Kennedy. I really appreciate how Ian strings lyrics together, he's exceptionally poetic and has a unique way of painting a picture with them.
Somebody by ZOE Music - this one has a funky sound to it, but that's one of the reasons I like it. If you listen to the lyrics, this is an intense song. It's legitimately all about staying rooted in your identity in Jesus. "Oh, nobody loves me like you love me. You say I'm somebody. Someone you love (You love, You love). Heaven open, crash in like an ocean. You say that I'm chosen and someone you love."
The Prayer by Kody West - I'm really drawn to the twang of this song. It reminds me of driving home from school on a warm spring day with the windows down. Every once in awhile, on those really nice days, I'd take the extra long way home and just drive for awhile with the windows down and music blasting. If you're wondering, this is a great song for that.
You Won't Ever Be Lonely by Andy Griggs - when I twirl Gus around the living room on occasion, this the song that's playing. It's definitely an older song compared to the rest of the list and only recently became a favorite. I heard it and instantly thought of Gus. In short, it hits me in the feelings.
This list could absolutely go on forever. I truly love music and I have a lot of favorites.
BONUS LIST! I think my favorite songs are the ones that I can sing loudly without a care in the world. The place I've found myself doing this with absolute reckless abandon is at church. Sometimes I wonder if I'm bothering the people in the pews close to me, but then I remember my voice doesn't carry all that well so I sing even louder. Here are some of my favorite songs to sing at top volume:
Springtime by Chris Renzema
Way Maker by Leeland
Fountain (I Am Good) by Mosaic MSC
Come to Jesus by People of the Earth
The Middle by Audrey Assad
Raise a Hallelujah by Bethel Music
O Come to the Altar by Elevation Worship
What a Beautiful Name by Hillsong Worship
Build My Life by Housefires
Reckless Love by Cory Asbury
